Otavalo was different. For some reason, we never got tired. We planned to spend a few hours at the market but were so drawn to the people and so in awe of their craftsmanship that we wandered past the same stalls ALL DAY long. We stopped only for a food break and to empty our packs of our purchases at the hostal. We then returned eagerly to engage the market again. We were there when they were setting up in the morning and when they were tearing down the stalls at dark. It was SO MUCH FUN. Not to mention, we have successfully completed our Christmas shopping!
The Otavaleños are incredible business people and bartering is part of their culture but they do it in the nicest way! On one occasion we got down to a REALLY good deal and I was beginning to feel guilty about how little I was paying for the incredible pieces of work. However, the older woman I was purchasing from was overjoyed that we valued her goods enough to buy them that she gave us each a woven bracelet just to say thank you. We loved Otavalo!
