Road to Jericho
We began early this morning traveling the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way Geoff taught the guys the Sh'ma (Sh-Mah). The Sh'ma was a familiar saying in Jesus day and remains so among Jews today. Jesus (in accordance with His culture, along with those around him) would have repeated these words multiple times every single day:
Love the L-RD your G-D with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
And love your neighbor as yourself."
Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Leviticus 19:18
“Teacher...what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
(In classic eastern/Jewish culture Jesus responds with a question.)
“What is written in the Law?” He replied. “How do you read it?”
He answered (with the Sh'ma), “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,' and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
(At this point the expert in the law attempting to test Jesus looks ridiculous. Of course it's the Sh'ma!)
But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
The Samaritan. The half-breed. The one you hate. You wanted to hear "Pharisee," not "Samaritan," but it's easy to love those who are like you, who think the same, look the same, worship the same. Whether you are right or not you are called to love your enemy, the Samaritan, the way he loved in this story.
Geoff pointed out a few more cultural and geographic insights about the road itself and surrounding areas and we were to our next stop.
Ein Gedi - Spring of the Mountain Goat
I think it's safe to say this stop was the highlight of the day. The guys were hungry for the Living Water - not just to picture it but to EXPERIENCE it. Experience it they did, following Geoff's lead without a second thought they literally ran into the water embracing the LORD's refreshing grace and love.
