In truth, we were in need of a little time to slow down to process life and all the changes and opportunities before us. We've been wanting to get back to Colorado for a while and what better time to visit than now? With no home/house waiting for us after returning to the States, it was the perfect time for a little mountain getaway (and low season rates on week vacation rentals never hurt).
Perhaps influenced by the joy of being in the same place for 7 nights in a row (the longest for us since February), we had a wonderful time in the area. We explored Geoff's favorite nostalgic places and found new favorites along the way as we took some time to be still, to reflect, and to dream.
This lake (above and right) still had remnant sheets of ice on it, with just enough snow clinging to its banks for Geoff and Reyah to play in. Even with the ice the water of course wasn't too cold for Reyah to want to play. I know her Labrador self is bred for this kind of cold water, but I still couldn't bring myself to let her stay in very long. Made me cold.
First: Bumpy roads (such as all the roads Geoff wanted to explore through national forests, etc.) are not nearly as much fun as they used to be. To save time it seemed best that I just walk next to the truck lest I feel the need to stop for an emergency bathroom break with every single rock.
Second: There's less oxygen in the mountains; quite a predicament to someone sharing her lung space with a growing boy. I'm out of breath sitting still. This makes hiking a real inspiration to all as I pant along each easy trail we've taken as though climbing Mount Everest.
Third: Planning a camping trip causes me to hesitate a bit more than normal. I've heard of such luxuries as pregnancy pillows but they sound mythical at the moment. My bed for the next few days may look a lot like the bed of our truck. Hmmm. The camping pad Geoff bought me today (he's a keeper, I know) has its work cut out for it. But on the other hand, my increasingly awkward shape is not crazy comfortable in any position so why not?!
Below are a few more pictures of our road trip so far:
