After rainy, chilly weather last week in these Judean hills around Jerusalem, it has been amazing to feel the sunshine. Few things make me happier than feeling warm sun on my skin.
In these hills we're in the 80's this week but the wilderness regions at lower altitudes will see 90's - is summer almost here?
When it gets hot in Israel, it's no joke, even for this cold-natured Texas girl. A new group arrived yesterday and the "drink, drink, drink LOTS of water" ritual chanting officially began. We came to work with a seminary group here in June 2008 and about half of them ended up in the hospital for IV's from dehydration. They didn't drink enough. At least not enough water. As soon as we'd get one re-hydrated and checked out, we were back with another. Not the experience they were really going for, or we.
Geoff and I plan to leave Israel in late June, right when tourism here begins bursting at its seams and the temperatures soar. We will escape to the oasis of Texas. Wait.
As temperatures increase across the northern hemisphere let's keep the "drink, drink, drink LOTS of water" chant going. It's good for us. For further inspiration:
Benefits of drinking plenty of water:
But that's far away from us. Therefore, does it really exist, and how is it our problem?
We learned to appreciate water on an entirely new level living in Ecuador where we couldn't use the tap water without getting sick. Even in places like that, and others where even dirty tap water is unavailable, we can make a difference.
Prayer is good - because prayer is also action. Perhaps this week as an active form of prayer we can pass up that regular sonic drink, soda with dinner, or other "drink treat" as a prayer of fasting and send the money saved to one of the hard-working organizations changing lives through clean-water initiatives. Even a single dollar would have a profound impact. It's hard to believe how far that dollar can go, but it does.
Fasting, even from one drink, is a beautiful way to remember and love others, and even remind ourselves who we really are. The thing about GOD's design is - when we deny ourselves we often receive even more in return. It's taking advantage of these small moments and opportunities to love that makes life - LIFE.
Here are a few organizations we have been in contact with in some way or another that are making a big difference and would be blessed by our contribution, and active prayer:
World Vision: Clean Water
The Water Project: Liam's Wells
L'Chaim! To Life!
